Guiding
Members
Toward Healthy Decisions
Estimado médico y personal del consultorio:
If you’ve visited our
Web site, www.humana.com
lately, you’ve probably noticed that it has a new look as
well as a new tagline, which is intended to capture the spirit of
our supportive approach toward our members. “Guidance When
You Need It Most” is the embodiment of Humana’s promise
to provide tools and data to our members that will enable them to
make informed decisions about their health care and health benefits
spending.
It is not intended to imply guidance from Humana to our network
physicians and other providers; however, we believe these member
tools will benefit you by educating your patients about their health
plan and encouraging them to be active decision-makers in their
own care, including how to better plan for and manage health care
expenses.
For example, Humana recently commissioned a survey, conducted by
Harris Interactive, to find out about consumers’ needs for
budgeting health care dollars. Among the findings:
- 66 percent said they would like help understanding health care
expenses and with budget planning
- 44 percent were not confident they could predict their health
care expenses for the year
- 30 percent have delayed physician-recommended treatment because
of cost concerns
In response, Humana and the advocacy group, Consumer
Action, have developed the Family Health Budget, which will educate
consumers about the cost of health care and help them make wiser
budgeting decisions, first by asking a series of questions about
a family’s health care utilization, then providing an estimate
of expenses. Anyone can access the Family Health Budget at www.familyhealthbudget.com.
Humana has unveiled SmartSummary, a tool available to our
members that also helps with health care budget planning. It displays
claims and utilization history, provides articles on health topics
targeted to the individual’s needs, logs calls made to Humana’s
customer service line and enables users to create a personalized
health record for sharing with physicians.
In fact, Humana offers a variety of Health Resources — from
MyHumana, a password-protected, personal home page for
members, to Maximize Your Benefits, a telephone information service
helping members find lower cost medications to discuss with you
—that guide our members toward making smart care choices all
along the health care continuum.
We want you to be aware that these resources are available to your
Humana-insured patients. Our hope is that, as they become better
educated consumers of health care — and wiser users of health
care dollars — it will help you and your office to spend more
of your time where it matters most — caring for patients
Atentamente,

Bruce Perkins Vicepresidente Senior, Contrataciones nacionales
